Diploma Festival

The MA Contemporary Arts Practice at Bern University of the Arts HKB is pleased to launch «COMMON GROUND», the 2020 edition of the diploma festival. This year, it is taking place online due to the corona-related restrictions that have impacted all of our lives. Common Ground, a title selected by our diploma class, therefore holds special significance as both a question and reflection of our current experiences. The virtual space has become the “common ground” where we meet, exchange ideas, and present works.

Following the course of our studies, the festival platform brings together 26 graduating students working across disciplines such as Fine Arts, Sound Arts, Performance Art, and Literary Writing/Translation. The works enter into an immediate dialogue, creating random and specific relationships at once.

We warmly invite you to explore the pages and profiles of the individual artists. Tune in for screenings, sound and exhibition spaces, live streams of performances, a radio show, and readings. For the detailed festival program please click here.

We congratulate our diploma class on this great accomplishment. We applaud their determination and also their flexibility in this very difficult time. It’s been an impressive joint effort!

We also thank our partner Kunsthaus Pasquart, Biel/Bienne, for the long-standing relationship and support of our festival and for co-hosting this current online edition.

MA Contemporary Arts Practice

The MA Contemporary Arts Practice at Bern University of the Arts is a dynamic two-year, multi-disciplinary program focusing on the four study areas, Fine Arts, Sound Arts, Literary Writing/Translation, and Performance Art. Drawing upon a national and international network, this is the only such course in Switzerland. The program aims to foster independent artistic positions in a context of collective and interdisciplinary relationships. Individual mentoring sessions and group seminars enable exchanges among students and teaching staff across different fields of art.

Master’s students benefit from highly-personalized tutoring and courses that focus on both theory and issues of artistic practice. Joint events include study trips and theoretical seminars; presentations of students’ own work for discussion at colloquies; and showcasing projects at public events. An excellent infrastructure – artist and recording studios; mechanical workshops; and media libraries – provides the framework for this Master’s course, which can only be studied at Bern University of the Arts HKB.
